Fishing Rods And Equipment To Enhance Your Fishing Experience

The characteristics of a fishing rod:

  • Grip: This is the part of the fishing rod from where you’ll be holding the rod when you’re casting and retrieving. The handle or the grip is usually made of cork or foam.

  • Strength: Depending on the type of fish that you want to catch and the weight of the lure you’ll be using, you will have to decide on how strong or light your fishing rod should be. Stronger rods are good for casting heavy lures but they lack sensitivity to gentle strikes from a fish and may not be flexible enough to work well with a lightweight line. Lighter fishing rods, on the other hand, are very sensitive but not suitable for catching a bigger fish.

  • Length: Fishing rods come in different lengths and sizes with each having a unique advantage over the other. A shorter rod gives more power to fight a fish whereas longer rods allow you to cast farther and are therefore suitable for surf-casting and shore fishing.

  • Action: Fishing rods also vary with three types of actions - slow, medium & fast. Slow action is good for casting light baits and is good for beginners. Medium action rods are stronger than slow action ones and are therefore more versatile. Fast action rods are stiffer and are well suited for bottom fishing with heavy lures.

How to choose a Fishing Rod:

Depending on what you’re fishing for and what you’ll be fishing with, you can choose what type of fishing rod will work best.

  • Lure Fishing Rods: These spinning rods are best used with artificial baits or lures and can be used in freshwater and saltwater.

  • Freshwater Fishing Rods: Freshwater fishing rods are thinner, lighter and more sensitive to bites.

  • Seawater Fishing Rods: These rods are longer, stronger and stiffer and the guides are made of non-corrosive material to avoid corrosion due to saltwater.
