Officially, petanque is played in a bowling alley. There is however no regulatory surface.

Thus, it is possible to play on clay or gravel. If you do not have a bowling alley near you, all places are good for playing Petanque, from the village square to the parking of the campsite or passing by the beach!

What are the dimensions of the playing area?

Allow room to play. The balls roll and you must be able to move easily on the ground to assess the situation, so take your ease, especially if you are many. Officially, a plot is 4m wide, 15m long and bounded by a wooden border, usually railway ties. If you are not on official ground delimited, think nevertheless to set limits, any ball out of these limits not being counted in the game.

For each player to throw his balls from the same starting point, the team that starts the game draws on the ground a circle with a diameter of 35 to 50cm.

The jack  must be thrown between 6 and 10 meters from the circle at least 1 meter from any obstacle.

If you play with your children, be careful to play far enough from the roads, the balls can sometimes go very far.

Number Of Players:

The petanque is played officially in 1 against 1 (head to head), or in team of 2 (doublet) or 3 players (triplet).

These rules should not prevent you from starting games with more players. In this case, we recommend not to exceed 6 balls per team and / or 2 balls per player, at the risk of not being there on the field.

How to count points ?

The jack started and the first ball placed, it is the turn of the second team to play.

As long as she does not place a ball closer to the jack, she continues to play. If she takes the lead again, it is again the turn of the first team. And so on until all the balls are played.

The winning team scores as many points as they have balls better placed near the jack than the best of the opposing team.
