Nordic walking is performed with special walking poles on flat or gently sloped ground.These monostrand walking poles help propel your action and work your upper body more intensely. Hiking is done with adjustable walking poles that are used for holding position when climbing, and to avoid slipping when descending.

Two poles are used for Nordic walking to accentuate the natural arm movement and propel the body forward.Nordic walking poles are usually made in one section to reduce weight and vibrations​. Finally, they have points (round or bevelled) and tips for optimal grip on all surfaces.
