Made for Our team of walkers designed this NH500 20l backpack for walks in the forest or along the coast, even when it’s raining! Why? To design a backpack that’s both comfy to wear and features plenty of accessories, with five pockets and a rain cover. Suitable for walks on fairly flat terrain.
The volume of each backpack is measured using a standardised method: we fill the main compartment as well as each pocket with little balls. Then we empty these balls into a graduated container, which gives the equivalent volume in litres.
How do I adjust my backpack?
1 – Loosen all straps (shoulders, waist, pull cords)
2 – Put the backpack on
3 – Tighten the shoulder straps
4 – Adjust the pull cords as required
How do I pack my backpack?
Place heavier items at the bottom. Pack your clothes around these items. Keep your waterproof jacket and/or fleece close to hand. Place small items for daily use (sun cream, map, glasses, etc.) in the pockets.). The water pouch can be placed in the designated compartment down the back, and water bottles in the outer holders.
We conduct lab trials to test the following components: fabric, buckles, straps, foam, zips. For example, for fabric, we see how it withstands abrasion and tearing, how its colours hold under UV light, and how watertight it is. We also carry out tests to check product resistance by simulating accelerated wear and tear of a backpack worn by a mannequin that recreates a hiker’s movements.
A score for comparing products' environmental impact
The product's environmental impact is calculated over its entire lifespan, using various indicators. An ABCDE score is provided to help you easily identify the most environmentally friendly products when comparing the same type of product (T shirts, trousers, backpacks, etc.). Decathlon is committed to visually displaying environmental information.

Our design team devises, dreams up and designs the Quechua product range at the foot of Mont Blanc in France. We test them in the field with other hikers to make sure that they are comfortable and long-lasting (e.g. Brittany, Corsica, Reunion, etc.). We head out onto as many different terrains as possible, in all weather conditions. These sessions involve a lot of discussions. We use these to get your feedback and prepare our future collections!
